Paul Bettany: ‘Jennifer is an amazing mother’

Paul Bettany has praised wife Jennifer Connelly’s dedication to being a mother. The couple, who are parents to 14-year-old Kai and 8-year-old Stellan, welcomed daughter Agnes in May. The Tourist actor claimed that parenting is the most important thing to Connelly and applauded her for doing an “amazing” job raising their children. “[Being a parent] needs to be the biggest focus of your life. And it absolutely is the most important, biggest focus of my wife’s life,” Bettany told US Weekly. “She is amazing at it. It’s not fake. Everyone says that, but it’s actually really true. It’s the most important thing in her life.”

A new series will feature major actors reading great works of literature

Audible.com is going Hollywood, enlisting a roster of A-list stars to record a new line of audiobooks drawn from famous works of literature.
Kate Winslet, whose reading of Emile Zola’s Therese Raquin was the first audiobook in the new series to be recorded, said of the experience: “You use a different part of your brain and it keeps your creative juices flowing. It is challenging, and it’s a heck of a lot of fun as well. As a listener, being able to tune out and be taken into another world, an atmosphere, an environment that is being created entirely for you by somebody else’s voice is really a wonderful, magical thing.”
Other stars who’ve signed up to read great books include Nicole Kidman, who won an Oscar for playing Virginia Woolf in The Hours and who will be reading Woolf’s To the Lighthouse; Anne Hathaway, who is lending her voice to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; and Dustin Hoffman, who will read Jerzy Kosinski’s Being There.
The first of the new productions will be released early next year by Audible.com, which invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997. This year, the company said, downloads by Audible members are up more than 40% year-over-year, with individual members downloading an average of more than 18 books over the course of a year.
Other actors slated to perform in the new series and the books they will read are Kim Basinger (The Awakening by Kate Chopin); Annette Bening (Mrs. Dalloway by Woolf); Jennifer Connelly (The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles); Colin Firth (The End of the Affair by Graham Greene); Samuel L. Jackson (A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes); Meg Ryan (The Human Comedy by William Saroyan); Susan Sarandon (The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers); and Naomi Watts (Summer by Edith Wharton).

Paul Bettany on why his Hollywood marriage works

By then he’d also made A Beautiful Mind, in which he starred with Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe, who both won Oscars for their performances. Bettany would play with Kai, Jennifer’s son with photographer David Dugan, in her trailer. But there was no on-set romance.
‘Jennifer and I were both with other people,’ he says. ‘We’d been speaking on the phone throughout the year when 9/11 happened. I was in Italy and found myself ringing her again and again and again. I thought: “What the hell’s going on here? I’m probably in love with this woman.” It took a terror attack to realise.’
Bettany jokes that he married up with Connelly because she studied at Yale and Stanford, and is multilingual. But the fact is they share a passion for leading an unstarry life. They were married on January 1, 2003, in Scotland with eight people present. Minutes after, they got drunk and played Twister in their pyjamas.
‘People think we’re such a Hollywood couple and they say: “Goodness, they’ve been together for eight years,” which in Hollywood terms is about 40 years, like dog years. Or they look at us askance because we’re still together.’
They even survived making their second film together, co-starring in Creation in 2009 with Bettany playing Charles Darwin and Connelly his wife Emma.
Despite being constantly in demand, they work alternately so they can be together and have never been apart for longer than two weeks. ‘You’ve got to make sacrifices,’ says Bettany. ‘Rather than ride roughshod, we have to listen.’
As well as 14-year-old Kai, the couple have a son, Stellan, eight, and daughter Agnes Lark, who is four months old.
Bettany wanted children desperately. He has said he feels saved by them. ‘Having children is lovely. What else are you going to do with your life, really?’
He’ll bring his family to London if his next big movie comes off. ‘I can’t say yet what it is, but I’ll be over the moon because I miss London. I live in New York, but we won’t always be there.’
