Dustin Lance Black, who won a screenwriting Oscar in 2008 for Milk (and also produced and wrote for HBO’s Big Love) premiered his first major directorial effort Wednesday night at the Elgin Theatre. What’s Wrong With Virginia, a heartfelt comedy about a mentally ill mother and her teenage son living in a small town has gotten mixed reactions. But that didn’t deter Black from waxing effusive about the film’s stars. About Jennifer Connelly who plays Virginia, the schizophrenic mother, Black raved: “I’d like to have Jennifer Connelly in every one of my movies. I’m in love with her.” About newcomer Harrison Gilbertson, who plays her son, he said: “When he read I thought ‘how great to get an actor who’s actually from the South.’ And he was Australian.”
