Real-life couple Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany will kick off the Toronto International Film Festival with the life story of Charles Darwin. Bettany stars as the theory-of-evolution pioneer and Connelly plays his wife in Creation, which opens the festival Sept. 10. The film is directed by Jon Amiel, whose credits include The Core and Entrapment. The Toronto event is among a flurry of film showcases, including the Venice and Telluride festivals, that help launch Hollywood’s awards season each year. Creation premieres in the year marking the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. Adapted from the book Annie’s Box, the movie centers on Darwin’s struggle between science and God as he refines his theories amid his wife’s deep religious conviction and grief over the death of his young daughter. “The tension between faith and reason is prominent in contemporary culture, and this intimate look at Darwin puts a human face on a man whose theory remains controversial to this day,” said festival director Piers Handling.

Focus Features has launched a new viral site for Shane Acker’s 9, opening in theaters on September 9th. The site, located at 9Experiment.com, is the lab of the scientist (check out his Facebook page) who created the characters and will tell the story leading up to the film over time. Powerhouse acting couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly have just finished a labour of love, their film about Charles Darwin’s marriage. And the result is a fascinating insight into a difficult period of the famous naturalist’s life, during which he wrote his then controversial book about evolution. Creation focuses on the conflict between the father of the evolution theory and his deeply religious wife Emma. British actor Paul describes playing the great man as a “real honour and also horribly frightening”. He was grateful, though, for the chance to work with his Oscar-winning wife Jennifer, whom he met on the set of A Beautiful Mind, and who stars as his spouse in the bio-pic. “We did get a lot for free in terms of the physicality that real married people have with each other,” he explains. “There’s a slight absent minded closeness that you see between Jennifer and I in the movie which is really, really useful.”
