Connelly and Kinnear Set for Indie Drama “Writers”

Negotiations are underway for Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream) and Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) to star in the indie drama, Writers. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Josh Boone who also wrote the original screenplay. The plot of Writers centers on the familial relationships between a well-established novelist (Kinnear), his ex-wife (Connelly) and their children: a college-age daughter and teenage son. THR reports that Judy Cairo (Crazy Heart) of Informant Media will produce the project. “Virginia” Finally Scores Distribution

Following his Oscar win for penning Gus Van Sant’s poignant biopic Milk, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black decided to take to the director’s chair himself to helm his next script, What’s Wrong With Virginia. The drama, which co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Emma Roberts, was completed in 2010, and soon scored a spot at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, there it had a lackluster showing and was subsequently lost amid such high-profile productions as Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, and John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole. From there, it faded from the spotlight and was left with no promise of theatrical release. However, THR now reports that this has all changed thanks to the Toronto-based, indie distribution company Entertainment One, who has just purchased the rights to distribute the feature throughout North America.
The melodrama, now called simply Virginia, centers on the tumultuous relationship between a mentally unstable single-mom (Connelly) and her lonely teen son (Harrison Gilbertson), who is on a desperate quest to uncover the identity of the father he’s never known. Convinced his real dad is the local Sherriff (Harris), who is by all accounts and upstanding family man, the boy begins some amateur detective work that takes him into dangerous terrain as he falls for the Sherriff’s lovely daughter (Roberts). Toby Jones, Carrie Preston, and Yeardley Smith co-star.
Entertainment One (also known as eOne) has announced plans to release Virginia as early as this spring. Dylan Wiley, eOne Films US vp of theatrical marketing and distribution, believes the drama will be a great fit, saying: “We’re excited to add Virginia to our 2012 slate and thrilled to have found a film that complements both our Canadian and US line-ups so well.”
No specific release date has yet been announced.

‘The Rocketeer’ Finally Coming to Blu-ray

Disney has heard the cries of fans and has finally given The Rocketeer a Blu-ray release date: Dec.13, 2011. News of the Blu-ray began leaking earlier this week when it popped up on Amazon.com, with the company making the news official today. Rocketeer is the beloved adaptation of the short-lived Dave Stevens 1980s comic book that starred Billy Campbell, Jenifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton. When the Joe Johnston-directed movie was first released in 1991, Disney considered it a disaster. Since then, however, it’s gained a loyal and rapid following and has become an influencer on a generation of young Hollywood execs. A 20th anniversary screening of the movie in June put on by Disney fan club D23 showed how loved the movie is, with the event not only selling out but fans dressing up as the jet-pack clad hero. One reason for the love is the movie wears its heart on its sleeve. The story of test pilot finding a jet pack and using it to fight Nazis in 1940s Hollywood is unironic and a little bit cornbally, but that, along with the great score, has only give the movie an ageless quality. And in a way, this summer’s Captain America, also directed by Johnston, is great companion piece to it. No details in terms of extras were given but they may be minimal. The edition is only one disc, so it’s not a DVD or digital combo pack. The price will be $26.50

Argento’s Phenomena comes to UK DVD and Blu-Ray!

Master of Italian horror Dario Argento is joined by Jennifer Connelly and Donald Pleasence for a gory 1980s classic in Phenomena, a terrifying slice of fear cinema that mixes extreme violence, pounding metal music, a vicious chimp wielding a scalpel and enough buzzing insects to choke an entire school. Poor sleepwalking Jennifer Corvino (Connelly) doesn’t fit in at her boarding school and her uncanny ability to control insects isn’t helping her popularity. With the aid of a local entomologist (Pleasence), can she use her psychic insect skills to find the killer who’s leaving her fellow pupils in bloody pieces? Argento piles on the bloody kills and surreal nightmares as the deafening buzz of a million bugs shatters your eardrums in one of the most demented body-horror movies ever produced. Phenomena will be released on DVD (£17.99) and Blu-ray (£24.99) by Arrow Video on 7th March 2011.
Special Features:
